The Cross Burns Brightly, The Story Of Mel Blount. Winner of Silver Telly Award.
On the field he was a football legend, but his greatest challenge came when he tackled the hearts of young boys.
From his days on the field as a Pittsburgh Steeler, Mel Blount had a vision to establish a home for troubled boys--a place where they could find discipline, love, and hope. To succeed, Blount faced tough opposition and adversity including racism, threats on his life, hostility from the local press, and a constant lack of funds. But through the same courage, perseverance, and unshakable faith in God that drove his career, Mel saw his dream come true.
The Cross Burns Brightly is Mel Blount's own account of his struggle. He takes you back to his boyhood home and the high points of his career. You walk with him through the streets where he heard racist chants and past the fields where the KKK burned its cross. And you ride with him to his mountain, to meet the boys he knew were worth fighting for all along.
Mel Blount is the founder of two private, non-profit youth homes for troubled boys. In 1991, he became President Bush's 524th Daily Point of Light. Mel played in four winning Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers and in 1989, his first year of eligibility, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
